Beryl Begins its Battle with Heavy Wind Shear as it Closes in on Jamaica Tomorrow
Tuesday, July 2, 2024
Beryl is expected to run head on into wind shear that may exceed 30 kts on Wednesday. Weaker systems would normally be torn apart by this type wind shear. So we’ll see how Beryl holds up. Until now, it’s held together relatively well despite the moderate shear already impacting it. Beryl will also be dealing with land interaction when it impacts or makes landfall in Jamaica. A landfall will undoubtably induce weakening. Beryl’s structure after it pulls away from Jamaica may have big downstream implications that we’ll discuss tomorrow and Thursday.
Records Continue to Tumble as Beryl Explodes into a Historic Category 5 Hurricane in the Caribbean!
Monday, July 1, 2024.
The 2024 Atlantic Hurricane Season continues to amaze and astonish, just 30 days into the season. Hurricane Beryl, after making an historic landfall earlier today, has exploded into a historic Category 5 hurricane as it treks through the Caribbean. We’ve been talking about the high ocean heat content for months before the start of the season. It now seems as though that deep warm water is being tapped and Beryl is taking full advantage of it and the near perfect atmosphere around it.
One reason why #Hurricane #Beryl intensified to a Category 5 hurricane over two weeks earlier than any other Atlantic Cat. 5 on record is due to extremely high ocean heat content levels. Caribbean ocean heat content today is normally what we get in the middle of September. pic.twitter.com/dmEY7EFrLs

The conditions ahead for Beryl may not be as favorable as shear is expected to stregnthen and impact the storm before or during its approach to Jamaica. Jamaica is under a Hurricane Warning tonight.
The Long Range
The question increasingly on the minds of meteorologists and US Gulf Coast residents is where will Beryl go from here? Will it impact the US later this weekend as some models show? How strong might it be if it does impact the US? It’s still far too early to answer those questions at this moment. Right now, we do know that Beryl has two paths. Path 1 takes it over or just to the south of Jamaica, into the Yucatan, and to a second landfall in Mexico. Path 2 takes it over or just to the south of Jamaica, through the Yucatan Channel or a small part of the Yucatan, and then a turn to the north to threaten the US - intensity unknown at this time. Stay tuned!

Beryl Makes Landfall in Carriacou, Grenada, as a Powerful 150 mph Category 4 hurricane.
Monday, July 1, 2024
Beryl made landfall on Carriacou island in Grenada on the first day of July as a very powerful Category 4 hurricane with 150 mph winds and 950 mb pressure. Extensive building damage and tree defoliation was reported, a hallmark of the most powerful landfalling hurricanes.
Beryl broke more records today. It’s now the southernmost Category 4 hurricane on record. It’s also one of the strongest hurricanes to make landfall in the Grenadines that we know of.
Beryl Explodes into a Category 4 hurricane after period of Rapid Intensification!
Sunday, June 30, 2024
Hurricane Beryl exploded into a Category 4 hurricane on Sunday, June 30, 2024 after a period of rapid intensification that took it from a Tropical Depression on Friday to a monster Category 4 on Sunday. Because of the calendar and Beryl’s location, multiple records have been either tied, broken, or nearly broken.
Easternmost Hurricane in June
Beryl is the easternmost hurricane to develop for the month of June since official records have been kept on hurricanes dating back to the 1800s.
Exceptionally Rare June Major Hurricane
Beryl is the 3rd major hurricane to develop in the month of June on record.
Strongest June Hurricane
Beryl is the strongest June hurricane on record.
Exceptionally Rare Category 4 before August
Beryl is the 4th Category 4 hurricane to develop before the month of August.
Beryl Has Been Upgraded to a Hurricane. Strengthening into a Major Hurricane Expected.
Saturday June 29, 2024
Tropical Storm Beryl was upgraded to a hurricane on Saturday, June 29. Beryl is now the farthest east hurricane to develop so early in the season. Beryl is expected to strengthen into a major hurricane sometime on Sunday - a very rare event for June - before impacting and possibly making landfall in the Windward Islands. From there, Beryl will traverse the Caribbean where it’s expected to encounter conditions that may induce some weakening. After the Caribbean, the picture is less clear. Two paths exist for Beryl. Path 1, the southernmost path, would take it into the Yucatan or Central American countries. Path 2, the northernmost path, would take it into the central Gulf of Mexico and almost certainly threaten a US landfall. For now, it’s too early to say where Beryl will end up in a week.
Tropical Depression Two Quickly Upgraded to Tropical Storm Beryl
Tropical Depression Two was upgraded to Tropical Storm Beryl hours after becoming a Depression. Beryl’s organization has been impressive for a tropical storm and it is expected to strengthen into a hurricane later on Saturday as it nears the Windward Islands. Although not unprecedented, it is very unusual situation to have a hurricane develop in the Atlantic Main Development Region in the month of June. The last season we saw a strong hurricane develop in this region and track through the Caribbean was Hurricane Emily during the notorious 2005 Season. It’s looking increasingly likely that 2024 will rival the 2005 season at least in terms of number of named storms.
